OMG!!The best Chinese restaurant in city! Super authentic!

Another great place to get spicy Sichuan food. Compared to another nearby Sichuan restaurant in the same street, I definitely prefer this one. It's spicy but not spicy only, it retains the other flavor of the ingredients very well. The rice noodles are quite good as well. So is the green mustard, very refreshing. There's also a hot pot place here but in the basement. Will give it a try next time.

Authentic hunan cuisine. Very delicious!

The waiter was super sweet!! And they serve live frog dishes lol loved it. Went in on a Tuesday at around 7, but there were a lot empty tables. Doubted about the food in the beginning but it turned out great.

Hotpot with family, very good broth, fresh vegetables, and protein. The restaurant is overall very clean. Our server John Ricardo was excellent in providing us great service so I had to ask for his name to give him this well deserved post.

i love this place, the food is really good, reasonable prices and big portions. the staff were super accommodating and friendly. if you’re thinking of coming here you should

I love this place. My go to is the chef tan fish and Dan Dan noodles. Veggie options are great also hot pot is tasty downstairs. Will be coming back! Service is spectacular and good for this area.

The food is absolutely fantastic and elegantly presented. The staff is attentive and exceptionally kind.

Chef Tan is the best, I am so thankful for Chef Tan. I had Chef Tan twice yesterday and woke up having to convince myself not to go again today. Thank you Chef Tan!!!

Have revisited it once or twice since the original review but stopped in again few days ago. still the same. Noticed majority of the patrons were 20 & 30 somethings ABC's (American Born Chinese), probably NYU students

Ordered Fried Rice & braise Pork belly (30 minute wait)

I love this place

Stumbled upon this restaurant on chance, I was pleasantly suprised by how good it was!
A friend and I tried the fried chicken, scallion pancakes and chicken fried rice. The fried chicken was crispy and juicy with tongue-tingling spice. The fried rice and scallion pancakes were a delight as well. Would love to come again and try the rest of the menu!

Always my to-go option when ordering delivery from JC but first time dining in. Tastes dining in did feel better! Love the Hong Shao Rou so much!!! The eel could be cooked crispier and thinner. Overall pretty good flavors, and no crazy waiting line!

Love the food! Every dish we ordered was great.
Fried fish, eggplant greenbeans, mushrooms

Food was so yum and price was reasonable. The service was great and server was wonderful!!! Definitely a place to come and enjoy with friends

OMG, everyone listened to me.... they didn't tell anyone about this place. What a shame. Everyone doesn't know what they're missing. We were in town for 2 full days and cane here 2x. We were supposed to go to one of the famous ones down the street, but remembered we were disappointed last time. So, we came back.

The wife has tried soooooo many dishes, and the kid loves the Mapo Tofu and Chicken Lo Mein. The rice noodles were awesome, as was the Chongking chicken. Also had to have Mao's pork.

Everything is amazing. By far the best Hunan restaurants we've been to in LA, Dallas, or NYC.

If you're on the fence, come in and try this place.

Haven't seen a line here, and the servers are always friendly. Atmosphere is so fresh compared to all the other "stale" restaurants here.

Best spicy Chinese food I have ever eaten in NY , The Service is pretty good too,
And I really like the environment here, with the good music and cool lights, makes me feel I just back to my hometown

Good food, real Hunan style food!
Good service, very nice people!
Spicy spicy spicy!

My friend and I came here for dinner. It was the first time we entered this restaurant and we were amazed by their taste!

Beginning with the atmosphere, it's clear as day that upon entering, you will notice the ambience and style of Chef Tan's looks like a fine dining establishment, however the prices are akin to any other bar and pub restaurant, the prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes in the menu.

The menu is very clear and concise, shows every main ingredient in each dish, however, the images look smaller than the massive amount of food that is brought out. Initially the menu makes the items look nearly appetizer size, but I'm telling you now, the portion size of each dish could easily be divided amongst 2 people. The flavor of the Kung Pao chicken is a smooth blend of minorly sweet, and spicy from the peppers they use. However the chicken bites are smaller with medium slices of bell pepper and red onion, as well as peanuts to bring a side aroma to the dish, I give the Kung POW chicken an EASY 10/10. The LoMein noodles are also lighter in flavor and very healthy, the noodles taste like they are made from scratch in house, which is my first experience with noodles in any Chinese restaurant I've been in. My wife gave the noodles a 10/10 since her flavor preference is more light than mine, I give them a 9/10 for taste and quality. Now there is 1 dish I Must give a 5/10, that is the steamed spare ribs with sticky rice. Although the ribs were fairly moist, the flavor was very bland, it didn't seem like it was seasoned, and when it was steamed and covered in the rice, it was very messy. The rice took on the juices of the ribs which was very bland in my opinion, but the rice stand alone was done to perfection (when it Wasn't in contact with the ribs juices. The corn was perfect though! 5/10. I would try the steamed dumplings instead the next time I go there.

The tea was A MAZ ING!!! I am telling you now, the floral aroma that brought me back to when I would eat the nectar off of honey suckles was very enlightening, I saw the LIGHT! I have never had fresh in aged tea leaves at ANY Asian restaurant apart from here, served in those $300 hammered iron kettles! No sugar was in it, nor was it needed! It was paired with an earthy bitterness that danced beautifully with the floral aroma.

The Service!!! To say the food came out fast (aside from the steamed ribs in sticky rice) would be a major understatement! The service people were very attentive each time we needed our water filled, and when we had empty plates! They told me which meal was the biggest in portion (which is why I tried the steam spare ribs) and they were right!

The fact that the Friday night life was vibrant in other places with LONG wait times? And NOBODY was here?!?!?
I tell you, y'all need to come here NOW!!! They have all types of beverages that people have been Sleeping on! The menu is in this review. College students will LOVE this place to dine and chill also, though the ambience is calmer.

9.9/10 experience as a whole!!!

Do not be fooled by the simple nondescript decor . The food will wow you over and over again and you won't even be looking away from your plate for one second ! We came here for my husband's not so surprise birthday with some of his relatives. We gorged on plate after plate of tasty expertly prepared dishes . We wanted to order the entire menu but had to restrain ourselves . We will definitely be back!
A place to bring your Chinese food loving friends and relatives. For spice and non spice lovers there are dishes for each one in your party !

Finally a great Chinese place in the East Village. My only complaint is that they charge two dollars for a tiny amount of rice. Dishes could be priced two dollars more, include rice, and I wouldn't have cared, but the idea of nickel- and diming for rice is not appealing at all.

FYI call to make a reservation. I came to this place yesterday and omg it was worth it. The food came fast and it was super delicious. I will definitely come back. I must try other dishes they provide

Chef Tan is a new restaurant that's worth a visit amongst all the busy restaurants in St Marks. They were able to accommodate our large party of 8 immediately while still having quite a few tables full. We ordered:
1. Scallion rice 5/5
2. Chef tan / beef fried rice 4/5
3. Braised pork in Mao's Style 3/5
4. Chong Qing chicken 5/5
5. Mapotofu 4.5/5
6. iron plate with Mongolian beef 5/5
7. vegetarian string beans 5/5
8. Sautéed Beef with Celery 3/5

Out of the above, I loved the scallion fried rice and the ChongQing Chicken. The service was efficient and I can't complain about the food as it was fresh, warm, and delicious. Will be coming back soon.

I came here for a family style dinner with a big group. The flavors of some of the dishes were amazing, some were too spicy and some were a bit too bland for me. I recommend the Braised Pork Mao Style, Century Egg and Eggplant, the Spicy Cauliflower w/Pork Hunan Style, the Vegetarian String Beans and the Meat Floss & Salted Egg Yolk on Tofu ( It was a bit heavy but delicious anyway ). I will be coming back!

This is a very good home cook style sichuan and human style mix restaurant. It's nothing fancy, not fusion but a good old traditional flavor. A lot of dishes are at a very reasonable price. I was here on a Sunday for lunch it was not busy and we got our food really fast. There are four of us sharing a table and ordered a lot of food.

My favorites are the Sichuan style fried chicken it's boneless and really crispy with a lot of flavor. The dry fried string bean taste really good and authentic. LOVE the hengyang special rice noodle, the noodle is cooked to perfection and it has a little numbing peppercorn flavor to it. We Also tried variety of other appetizer and main dishes they are all very authentic and delicious.

Service was great our waitress keeps coming up to keep our water cup full. Didn't have to wait long for our food.

Delicious Sichuan & Hunan province cuisine featuring some of their most notable dishes, along with other Chinese staples such as Peking Duck. Very traditional dishes, nothing modern or fusion which makes it extra good. This is a perfect place to come with friends and share dishes as the serving sizes are quite large. Four of us shared 3 appetizers, 1 noodle, and 6 mains.... Oyyyy. We finished everything.

Some of the highlights:

- Salivating Chicken - mouthwatering chicken cold dish with chili oil and peanuts was amazing.
- Beef Tripe in Chili Oil - huge pieces, very good
- chili Fish - huge chunks
- Cumin Lamb - fan favorite, really simple.

Service was really fast and friendly. Love the beautifully modern space, very bright and colorful. Would be perfect for evening or rainy days too.

Elegant and affordable Chinese option, food is great, service is super, and quick. Many options with decent flavors, you will never go wrong with any dish here.
I went with a friend who knows the Chinese cuisine and he was really impressed.

A new spot opened up on st marks so of course I had to try!

When I first walked in i appreciated the space and high ceilings - perfect for groups. I loved how the menu had plenty of pictures to help me figure out what looked good. My favorites were the spicy fried chicken which was delicious - it tasted like popcorn chicken but with a mala spice and the Beijing duck wrap. The veggies I ordered were the string beans and napa cabbage with vermicelli noodles; both great.

I also love that I didn't have to wait to get a seat here!

This is the 2nd location of this restaurant - I've heard they have one in New Jersey already so all these recipes should be stress tested already.

Amazing & authentic Szechuan restaurant!

Price is commensurate with the area
Sleek & modern interior
Friendly & efficient staff

1) chongqing style fried chicken: crispy, breading to chicken ratio is great, much bigger pieces vs the teeny tiny pieces that are served at the Mountain House, will reorder
2) fish fillet in hot chili soup: one of the better restaurants to eat this dish; authentic; fish is tender (not frozen), will reorder
3) tofu iron plate: yum yum, a different type of tofu, + shrimp, delicious sauce to eat with rice, will reorder

Really rivals the adjacent Szechuan Mountain House (where you have to wait 1-2 hours before getting seated). I usually go to the Mountain House 1-2x/month but really excited to know that there's another restaurant right next door with minimal wait time that's just as good!

Great food. Good service. My wife and I stopped in and had the hunan lamb, Mao style pork, dandan noodles, and scallion pancake. Every last thing was great.
