Johnny and his crew took over this already favorited dumpling spot and made it even more special for me. You can catch me having my regular spread of XLBs, Shanghai Pan Fried Dumplings, green beans, and their house special noodles. Extra ginger on the side, please?!? Awesome.
They've touched the place up with a little more character to give it a more modern feel and I'm digging it. Aside from the food and atmosphere though?? It's really about the customer service. Sure, it can get busy at times but, generally speaking? They're super nice and courteous which is EVERYTHING to a patron that's in the customer service field, myself. I look forward to many, many more visits to this neighborhood spot.
Dumpling Kitchen vs Dumpling Specialist.
I recommend Dumpling Kitchen because you get more value out of it. Dumpling Kitchen reminds me of Din Tai Fung 2.0. So all you need to get is the Pan Fried Baos (6pcs) and the Shanghai Dumplings (12pcs).
You guys should come here around after 1 on weekdays, it's faster service and everyone goes here in the morning anyways, it's the same thing when you come in afternoon but they close at 3! You might want to park like a block away from the restaurant too, just in case if you don't want to pay meter!
Really good food. Don't know what else to say. Yelp wants me to write more, but all I can say is the items we ordered were all very good.
I can't be the only one who's excited to see Dumpling Kitchen back, am I right or am I right? I was stoked when I saw a mini crowd lining up here Saturday noon (but I normally wouldn't be happy to see a crowd).
My faves:
1. Pork XLB--the meat is fresh, juicy, and flavorful. What really makes or breaks a XLB is the wrapping and Dumpling Kitchen has this down. It's not too thick where you have to bite sharply to pierce through and it's not so thin that it tears when you pick it up.
2. Shanghai Style Pan-Fried Buns--1 word, delicious. The flavors are similar to the Pork XLB. The wrap is slightly thicker but has a nice crisp with each bite. Bottom's golden brown, then topped off with some green onions and sesame. Yes, there is soup inside as well and it's so juicy.
3. Shanghai Rice Cakes--has the perfect al dente chewy texture that I love. It's a bit greasy, but carbs never tasted so good.
Reasons why I keep coming back: food tastes delicious, service is quick, and prices are affordable. It's your standard mom and pop shop that's kinda small, but kinda delicious.
The food was so delicious! The broth in the soup dumplings had so much flavor compared to other places I've been to. I also had the wontons in chili oil and the fillings were so fresh and delicious. You know this place means business, and you can tell from the chili oil they provide on the tables. Some of the best I've had. Will definitely come back again when I'm in the area.
What??!! Please don't retire yet! Now I'll have to find another place that has decent XLB. Good luck and best wishes.
Going here since I was young. Well a little younger. ^_^
Dumplings are superb and still good. My son loves them too.
Great food and great ambiance. Although there was a wait it was well worth it!! All 7 of us were happy and we will return the next time we are in the area!
Yum, I love dumplings. Dumplings are great here, other stuff is a bit lacking, but good homemade dumplings make up for the other stuff.
Easy ordering takeout over the phone. Pass on the green onion pancake (wrong consistency, overly salty, weird taste, and way too oily) and salt and pepper fish (small portion, better elsewhere), and stick with any of their Shanghai or Beijing style dumplings, which are both soupy inside and tasty enough to not need any separate sauce. I also got the Hong Kong style fried bread roll, which comes with condensed milk--just ok, i prefer it a bit smaller so you get more of the crunch in each bite, but was just craving that white bread for some reason, and it satisfied the craving--you only get 1 piece for ~$4.
They have several large tables inside the restaurant, so may be a decent spot to bring family for makeshift dim sum (no carts, just order dumplings).
My new favorite dumpling place! Stopped by today before the lunch rush and was able to snag a table for five without a wait.
The good:
- rice rolls: the Chinese donut inside is made fresh so it's guaranteed to be crunchy
- pork dumplings: super juicy and flavorful; the XLB sauce goes nicely with these
- pan fried dumplings: the crunchy bottom on these provide the texture that dumplings lack; get an order so you can compare and contrast
- stir fried noodles: noodles are cooked perfectly al dente; I recommend getting the noodles with preserved vegetables - A+.
The ok:
- XLB: pretty juicy with a thin wrapper, but the meat inside wasn't as well formed as a XLB should be
- stir fried green beans: not as well fried as other places; garlic was delicious but the dish lacked a tiny bit of salt for me
The meh:
- wontons in spicy sauce: a little bland; could use more salt and could be a lot spicier
Prices are a little more expensive than Kingdom of Dumpling but service and speed of food coming out of the kitchen makes it well worth the small premium.
**MY GO TO PLACE** Yes, find me here every week! I'll be here... ordering the same thing... same thing... super consistent and everything excellent!
SERVICE: all I have to say about service is... "BEST SERVICE EVER" - seated right away (note: place gets busy, so come around 5pm, there's no line). Tea served and I'm ready to order!
FOOD:
(1) HOT & SOUR SOUP: yes, must get.... for all starters... this is the best hot and sour soup ever made! Everything is well balanced and lots ingredients - bamboo, fungus, tofu (*drools*), everything is great!
(2) Shanghai Steamed Soup Dumpling, #1: comes 10 pieces! Dip it in vinegar, make a tiny bite, suck the soup - be careful! Will burn you! So fresh, so good!
(3) Shanghai Fried Pork Buns, #5: if you're into the soup dumpling (what's wrong with you?) Have no fear... this is excellent also
(4) Honey Walnut Shrimp: is like nothing I ever had... very not your typical, basic Chinese honey walnut shrimp... this give you a kick of zest! Give it a try - but don't be expecting something else. Very different and I love it!
(5) Green bean: fresh, crispy and well made - never over cooked, and has a very nice crunch!
(6) Pea Sprouts in garlic - OMG... lots of flavors! Very well made again!
And... I always over order cause I get excited every time I eat here... even 3 days after... still in my fridge and it's still so good!
**OVERALL: everyone has to try to place!
Small, unpretentious place that had wall-to-wall hungry patrons on the Sunday evening we visited. There was a line but we barely got our names on the wait list when we were called in. We wanted to try something really different and the seafood chowmein sounded perfect! It was-lots of good fish, shrimp & scallops! The dumplings weren't boiling hot inside-which I appreciated since I scarfed them down. Red bean pancake was crispy on the edges, red bean delicious in the middle!
Parking is a nightmare (we found parking a few blocks over). Cash or debit cards only. These were the only things I could find to criticize this restaurant on. Next time I'm trying the greens (they looked amazing)!
They're back with a new fresh look!! Great and amazing food as usual! Get the Shanghai pork buns and the Shanghai dumplings. Delicious!
Dumpling and noodle craving satisfied!! Came here on Sunday around 12PM and was already super packed, I joined the waitlist though so thankfully skipped the wait. Ordered the XLB, spicy wontons, beef stew, and green onion pancake.
-XLBs were sooooo good!! The skin was thicker than others I've had but I think this helped hold the broth inside of the dumplings better, very flavorful. Ask for the red vinegar w/ ginger with this, so delicious!
-Spicy wontons IMO could be better, the chili oil wasn't that flavorful and not that spicy. But I loved the wonton skins and the filling inside.
-Beef in the beef stew was SO tender and the noodles were perfect!! Only complaint was that the broth itself though was very bland, but I'd order again for the meat because it was cooked perfectly which I find a lot of restaurants always tend to over cook.
-The green onion pancake was a last minute decision, my boyfriend and I saw it on another party's table and decided we needed that in our life. Best decision ever, the green onion pancake was sooo flaky on the inside and soft on the inside. Definitely a must try!
Everything was reasonably priced and portions were just right. The food we got were definitely I feel meant for a party of 4, don't know how we managed to eat everything between us two lol! Total came to be 42 with tip. Parking can be a hassle, so make sure to join that waitlist! Seems like this place is the busiest during lunch time.
I love dumplings, and Dumpling Kitchen delivers.
An eager party of two, we shared the pork dumplings in chili oil, Shanghai style pan fried buns, Taiwanese rice rolls, and garlic pea shoots. Everything was delicious, and I loved the homemade chili oil at the table--reminded me of the one my own Chinese mother makes.
Next time I'm 1) definitely bringing more friends and 2) trying the braised pork belly and rice cakes!
Solid place for dumplings and Chinese food. This place has become so popular over the years! There is rarely a time when people are not queued out front in anxious anticipation.
Two of us came for a late lunch and enjoyed the Shanghai soup dumplings, pan-fried pork dumplings, and stir fried pea sprouts. Those veggies were off the hook delicious! Just the right amount of garlic and perfectly prepared! We loved dousing the dumplings with black vinegar before devouring each delectable bite.
We will happily return. Also, pro-tip: definitely join the waitlist via Yelp! We did then walked right in to our waiting table upon arrival.
This place has authentic Chinese food and at very affordable prices. Highly recommend.
Authentic and Homestyle Cuisine. All Dumplings are handmade in the Rear of the restaurant. Food was Simply Amazing and nothing less than advertised! Arrived 45 minutes before they were closing on a Saturday Night and they had 6 courses out within 20 minutes! Service was friendly, attentive, and hospitable. Only Hiccup to a night of fine dumpling dining will be parking. Limited to only Street parking - but hey it's SF learn how to parallel park like a grown up and don't be afraid to look on a side street or two if there is nothing in front. Or Uber/Lyft if your close. Food was well worth it and I definitely will be making a return trip to Sunset District.
